Our Tests in Comparison to Government / NHS Tests
While our PCR tests are the same as government/NHS tests, current rules state that NHS tests are not to be used for recreational travel purposes. There is currently a massive burden being placed on our health service by those planning to leave the country for travel.
Our PCR tests are specifically for travelling abroad. If you’re concerned you’re displaying symptoms of Coronavirus, you should book a test via the Government website. You can also purchase a PCR test from our online shop.
What is a PCR Test?
PCR stands for Polymerise Chain Reaction and it tests for whether a person actively has the Coronavirus present in the body.
It’s performed by taking a swab sample from the back of the nose and throat and detects the presence of antigen very early on in infection before antibodies begin to form and before symptoms begin to show.
A PCR test is highly accurate at indicating who is infected with Covid-19, allowing individuals to be isolated quickly and therefore preventing further spreading of the virus.
How does a Covid-19 PCR test work?
Both the in-clinic and at home tests are the same. If you’re taking the test at home to return to us, it’s important to perform the test exactly as per the instructions enclosed.
Inside the test, kit is a sterile swab to take a sample from the back of your nose and throat and a test tube with preservative fluid. Carefully insert the swab into the back of the throat near and rotate a few times. Then insert into the back of the nose just far enough so you hit a little resistance, and rotate a few times again. This action ensures enough of the sample is collected for an accurate result. it’s worth noting that when the test is performed properly, it is normal to gag and experience watering of the eyes.
At our clinic, our trained staff will be on hand to take you through the entire process. The PCR test kit for mail-outs comes with full instructions, but If you are unsure how to perform the test you can contact us on 0333 305 8486 and we will talk you through it.
Why do I need a PCR test for travel?
While travel restrictions are continuously evolving, many popular destinations now require a fit-to-fly certificate. Providing you have a negative result, our results sheets (sent via email) are recognised as a fit-to-fly document.
Which countries require a PCR test?
When should I book the test?
We have a Standard and an Express option. When using the booking calendar above you will see when your result will be sent depending on which of those two options you select when you book. Most travel authorities require the test to be taken within 72 hours of the flight although this can vary and is subject to change, so please check the government website if you are unsure of the requirements for your destination.
We send out results via email between 4 pm and midnight.
Will I get a fit-to-fly certificate?
Yes, you will receive it with your results the moment they have returned from our CQC registered laboratory. It’s important you take both with them when you fly (an electronic copy is perfectly acceptable). As well as your result, the certificate features your personal identifying information, details of the test and our lab, plus the signature and rubber stamp from the medical professional who supervised the test.d
The results will be supplied via email.
Can I travel abroad after a Covid-19 PCR test?
Travel rules are ever-evolving during the Coronavirus pandemic, but current legislation states those travelling internationally will require a Covid-19 test and the resultant fit-to-fly certificate.
As guidance is always subject to change, we advise you to check official government website to see the status of your planned destination.
Please note: Your flight/destination could experience additional screening and/or monitoring at its border patrols. Do take the time to check the local guidelines, too.
How long does a Coronavirus test take?
The test itself only takes a few minutes and our appointments will easily fit around your schedule. You will then be notified of the results via our online booking calendar and to your email.
Can I buy tests, rather than coming to the Birmingham clinic for testing?
If you’re not displaying any symptoms and require a test for travelling overseas, we invite you to come for a test at our clinic. We have trained staff on hand to supervise all tests.
If you’re worried you may be displaying Coronavirus symptoms, or it’s simply more convenient for you, we also offer tests via mail for you to do at home. You will receive a PCR test kit via courier, complete with full instructions, which will then be returned to our testing laboratory.
If you have any more questions, or would like to book an in-clinic or mail-out test, our dedicated call centre is open 24 hours a day for your convenience. You can call us on 0333 305 8486 or book a test via our booking calendar.
Which countries can I travel to?
As the status of destinations is ever-changing during the Coronavirus pandemic, please check out travel information system for the latest restrictions.
When is the best time to book a Covid-19 test before I fly out?
It’s important to note that there may be variations in test windows depending on the travel operator or destination. We highly recommend checking both websites in good time before you travel. Most destinations expect Covid-19 tests to be done at least 72 hours prior to departure, but some require 94 hours.
When booking a Covid-19 PCR test through us, you’ll be able to see when you will receive your results via our booking calendar. We offer both a standard and express version, depending on your needs.
Is your laboratory regulated?
Yes, the laboratory we use is registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Certificate number: CRT1-4708702735
How reliable is the test?
When it comes to screening an individual to find out if they currently have Coronavirus, the PCR test is currently the most accurate. The test has 100% sensitivity due to the rigorous process it has to go through at the laboratory. Its efficiency derives from its detailed analysis of the genetic material, coupled with the swab being taken from the nasopharynx (the back of the nose and throat). This is the area that contains the most of the Covid-19 virus.
A positive result almost certainly means there’s SARS-CoV-2 present.
Will the test tell me if I’ve recently had the virus?
No, that’s a separate test known as an antibody test, which looks for if a person has previously been infected with Coronavirus. A PCR test will tell you if you’re currently infected.
