  • Our Tests in Comparison to Government / NHS Tests

The government does not allow the free NHS tests to be used for travel purposes, and no results sheet or fit-to-fly certification are given from those tests. Our tests are recognised by all airlines and a full results sheet is sent via email the day after you come in for a test.

  • How is an RT-PCR test different?

For the purpose of COVID-19 detection, both tests use swab samples from the nose and the throat. RT-PCR test involves an extra ‘reverse transcription’ step in the sequencing process.

Certain countries will only allow visitors who have taken an RT-PCR before arrival. However, countries, where the requirement is PCR test result will also accept results from an RT-PCR test.

VIVO Clinic’s tests are RT-PCR by design so that our results are accepted by all travel destinations.

  • What is a PCR Test?

A PCR test looks for a current Covid-19 infection. The laboratory analyses a swab sample which is taken from your throat and nose and determines the presence of the virus’ RNA.

  • Why do I need a PCR test for travel?

Most popular destinations require a showing of a negative result from a recent PCR test before allowing visitors to enter. This is a part of the effort to restrict cross border transmission of COVID-19 and its variants.

  • When should I book the test?

Every country has their own ruling on when a PCR test must be taken. For instance, the most common requirement involves taking the test within 72 hours of departure. This may not be applicable for your travel destination.

We strongly recommend that you are aware of the latest travel rules before booking your test. Please refer to the government’s website for up-to-date entry requirements of each country.

  • Will I get a travel certificate?

If your PCR test result comes back negative, we will include a fit-to-fly certificate with your result. This document will be signed by a medical professional and include details of the laboratory where the testing was conducted.

  • Can I buy tests, rather than coming to the Reading clinic for testing?

You can order our at-home PCR test kit here.

Please be advised, the at-home test may be unsuitable for travelling to countries requiring a test taken within 72 hours of travel. Our at-home test results take up to 48 hours to process.

  • How reliable is the test?

Several tests have been used to detect the virus through the pandemic, with some providing better results than others. The PCR test, one of the first such tests used, remains the one to give consistently correct results.

  • Will the test tell me if I’ve recently had the virus?

No. Only current infections can be detected by PCR tests.

You can order VIVO Clinic’s at-home immune response test to check for a previous COVID-19 infection.

  • What should I do if I receive a positive result?

You will not be allowed to travel in this case. You must enter quarantine immediately after receiving a positive result and reschedule your travel.

If you require guidance during the quarantine period, you may contact the NHS online or call them on 111.
