What is the right coronavirus test for me?

At VIVO Clinic, we understand that it can be difficult to know what type of COVID-19 test suits your circumstances. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, multiple tests have been introduced onto the market to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, and it can be confusing to determine when each test should be used.

Please see below for a simple explanation of each type of test that we offer, which includes PCR Tests and Antibody Tests.

Abbott’s IgG Antibody Test

Who is this for?: This is one of the first COVID-19 antibody tests to be offered to all individuals. This type of COVID-19 test is for those who wish to find out if they have recently been infected with the coronavirus. We have partnered with a CQC registered laboratory to offer Abbott’s IgG test. Your blood sample will be collected by a Phlebotomist either at one of our clinics, or at your home.

What is it?: Abbott’s IgG antibody test determines if Immunoglobulin G antibodies specific to SARS-CoV-2 are present within a blood sample. If you receive a positive result, this confirms that you have previously been infected with COVID-19. Abbott’s IgG antibody test has a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99%.

PCR Test

Who is this for?:  The PCR Test is available to all individuals. It is recommended that people take this test when they experience symptoms of COVID-19.

What is it?: The PCR Test is a swab test. Individuals must take a sample from their nose or throat, and send this off to the laboratory that we have partnered with. If genetic material related to the coronavirus is found, this confirms that the individual is currently infected with COVID-19.

IgG/IgM Antibody Test

Who is this for?: This type of COVID-19 test is for those who wish to find out if they have previously been infected with COVID-19, and if their body has built up antibodies to fight the illness.

What is it?: The IgG/IgM Antibody test is a rapid test which identifies the presence of Immunoglobulin G and Immunoglobulin M antibodies related to COVID-19 within a blood sample. If either or both types of COVID-19 antibodies are present, this indicates that you have recently been infected with COVID-19.

What type of COVID-19 test should I take if I want to find out if I am currently infected with the coronavirus?

The PCR Test will establish if you are currently infected with COVID-19. Medical professionals will examine a swab taken from a person’s nose or throat to determine if DNA related to COVID-19 is present.

What type of COVID-19 test should I use if I want to find out if I have previously been infected with the coronavirus?

The IgG Antibody Test identifies antibodies related to COVID-19 in your blood, which are built up in response to the initial infection. Antibodies suggest a level of immunity to an infection and can therefore show if you have previously been infected with COVID-19.

What type of test should I take if I have symptoms?

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, such as a continuous, dry cough or a high temperature, you should take the PCR Test to check if you are infected with COVID-19 rather than a cold or the flu. Alternatively, you can wait 14 to 21 days and take the IgG Antibody Test to find out if you were previously infected with COVID-19.

What type of test do I need if I have not experienced any symptoms?

Various people will be infected with COVID-19 without realising and will not experience any symptoms.

Those who are asymptomatic may not think that they need a COVID-19 test. However, if you are hoping to return to work as lockdown restrictions are lifted, you should look into a test to ensure that you can work safely.

If you are asymptomatic, and would like to find out if you are currently infected with COVID-19, you should take the PCR Test. PCR Tests are valuable for frontline workers, those who are isolating with people who are exhibiting symptoms, and those who lives with others who are vulnerable.

If you are asymptomatic, and would like to find out if you have already been infected with the coronavirus, you should use the IgG Antibody Test.
