The benefits of Botox injections are well documented, however, as with any cosmetic procedure, it is important to understand the potential risks.
This guide discusses some documented side-effects of Botox, however, if you are considering a Botox treatment at VIVO Body Studio our experienced doctor or prescribing nurse will discuss the pertinent aspects of the treatment during a consultation.
Botulinum toxin type A (Botox) has emerged as one of the most popular anti-ageing treatments. This product relaxes the muscles, which helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It’s also used to treat depression, chronic migraines, overactive bladder, strabismus, and other health conditions. At VIVO Body Studio we primarily use Botox injections for as an anti-ageing treatment, as well as a procedure to reduce sweating.
According to a six-week study, 52 percent of subjects who received Botox experienced major improvements in symptoms within six weeks. The FDA has also approved Botox for multiple applications, including those used at VIVO Body Studio.
Some of the risks and side-effects listed here do not apply to the applications used at VIVO Body Studio yet are listed to provide a clearer understanding of the Botox as a product.
Botox Side Effects
Just like everything else, Botulinum toxin has its potential drawbacks. Although rare, potential side effects include:
- Eye redness
- Drooping eyelids
- Bruises and irritation at the site of injection
- Allergic reactions
- Muscle stiffness
- Itching and rashes
- Painful urination
- Tinnitus
- Dry mouth
- Flu-like symptoms
- Fever
Patients may develop respiratory infections, UTIs, anxiety, or indigestion. Local reactions depend on the site of injection. For instance, if you receive Botox for overactive bladder, you may experience difficulty urinating.
This procedure should only be performed on healthy individuals. It’s not recommended for pregnant women and patients with multiple sclerosis, deep scars, or weak facial muscles. If you’re breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Botox.
