Cryolipolysis can be an exceptionally effective treatment when done correctly.

Although it is natural for the results to vary from patient to patient, the results themselves are fairly long-term.

To ensure that the procedure results last longer, following the prescribed aftercare guidance is essential.

Fat Freezing

A patient can expect, on average, 22% – 45% of fat to be reduced at the end of a single cryolipolysis session.

However, the average percentage of fat reduction per session is highly reliant on the fat density of the treatment area and its overall size.

While cryolipolysis successfully removes fat cells from the body by freezing them, it is not a weight reduction procedure.

Even if large quantities of fat cells are removed through the fat freezing procedure, there may not be substantial weight loss.

The fat cells in your body are limited. So, once fat cells are removed from the body through fat freezing, the body does not replace them with new cells.

However, the fat cells that remain once the procedure has successfully concluded could potentially grow in size resulting in fat being restored.

It is essential to stick to a healthy lifestyle after cryolipolysis. If you consume more calories than you burn, the leftover fat cells will collect fat and grow in size.

While fat freezing does not cause permanent side effects, there are a few short-term ones that are common.

As the procedure involve applying freezing temperatures to parts of the body for lengthened periods, a slight numbness is felt temporarily in the treated areas.

Patients with sensitive skin can have slight swelling and temporary redness just after the procedure.

While the stomach is the most common area of the body that patients request to treat, other areas of the body that the fat freezing procedure is capable of treating include:

  • Chin
  • Arms
  • Chest
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks
  • Upper and lower back

Since cryolipolysis is not a surgical treatment, there is no resultant downtime.

Patients can resume their daily activities as soon as the procedure concludes without needing to recover.

The quantity of fat freezing sessions that are required for desired outcomes depends wholly on two factors.

These are:

  • Size of the area being treated
  • The density of fat that needs to be removed

Many patients indeed report that they were able to achieve their desired result from only a single cryolipolysis session.

Many other patients require multiple sessions before they see satisfactory results.

Please note that while the average quantity of fate reduction per session is about 22%, VIVO Clinic cannot guarantee any exact results.

Cryolipolysis is not a treatment for obesity.

The fat freezing procedure is exclusively used for treating areas of the body with stubborn patches of fat cells.

For example, the abdomen area, which is notorious for collecting excess fat, can be made to look more toned using cryolipolysis.

However, fat freezing cannot be used as an alternative to the invasive procedures that are used to treat obesity.

Cryolipolysis is not an appropriate clinical procedure to get rid of cellulite.

VIVO Clinic’s Cellulite Reduction Treatment is the perfect non-invasive procedure to counteract cellulite.

The anti-cellulite treatment utilizes radio frequencies in combination with a high-tech cosmetic vacuum device to improve the skin’s elasticity.

No, the cryolipolysis procedure cannot be used to tighten sagging skin.

Radio Frequency Tummy Tightening is a non-surgical treatment from VIVO Clinic that can be employed to treat loose or stretched skin.

Before the procedure can take place, one of our clinical consultants will discuss the treatment with you and take notes on why you want to undergo cryolipolysis.

At the beginning of the procedure, the clinician will measure and mark the shape and size of the area to be treated.

Then the clinician will place a gel pad on the area that is about to go through the treatment.

The gel pad helps protect the skin from direct contact with the applicator’s extreme cold temperature.

The cryolipolysis applicator will be placed directly on the fatty patch to be treated. The area will be suctioned into the cavity of the applicator.

Once the fatty section is inside the applicator, the temperature will gradually be reduced to between -7°C and -8°C.

It is natural for the body to react briefly to the vacuum suction and intense cooling briefly before these sensations are replaced with tingling numbness.

There may even be some aches and cramping sensations, but the discomfort abates within 5 to 10 minutes of the procedure starting.

A single cryolipolysis session requires up to one hour to reach completion. During the procedure, patients are free to use the iPads available at the clinic to watch a movie or surf the web.

Fat freezing was approved by the FDA in 2010 as a fat reduction treatment for the abdomen. Treatment to be used in other areas of the body was approved only a few years down the decade.

However, the way the body’s fat cells react to contact with intense cold was discovered earlier.

The discovery had been made by Harvard scientists who noted that when children ate large quantities of popsicles, big dimples would form on their cheeks.

Dr R. Rox Anderson and Dr Dieter Manstein, the innovators of cryolipolysis, based the deliberate process of freezing fat on the ‘cold-induced fat necrosis’ seen occurring in children enjoying cold treats.

They would collect samples from paediatric patients for inspection of the phenomenon.

They would find that the fat inflammation that occurred after prolonged contact with the popsicles did not affect the outer skin and other tissues.
