Fat freezing is a highly effective treatment with potentially long-term results. However, adhering to the aftercare instructions provided by your clinician is crucial.
Depending on the fat density and the size of the treatment area, a single fat freezing session can reduce fat by 22% to 45%.
Cryolipolysis reduces fat by freezing and eliminating fat cells from specific areas of the body. However, despite the removal of fat cells, the treatment does not lead to significant weight loss.
That largely depends on your lifestyle. Cryolipolysis permanently removes fat cells from your body, meaning the eliminated fat cells will not return. However, this does not prevent new fat accumulation.
After the treatment, excessive caloric intake can cause the remaining fat cells to enlarge, leading to an increase in fat.
Since freezing temperatures are used in the procedure, it’s normal to experience slight numbness on the skin in treated areas. People with sensitive skin may sometimes experience:

- Temporary redness
There are no permanent or long-term side effects associated with cryolipolysis.

As a preliminary step, the clinician will assess the size and shape of the area designated for cryolipolysis. Following this, a gel pad will be applied to the outlined area to safeguard your skin from the sub-zero temperature of the cryolipolysis applicator.
Once the applicator is positioned over the treatment area, the fatty tissue will be drawn into the applicator’s hollow section through suction. Alongside the tugging sensation from the suction, you will experience concentrated cold temperatures, gradually dropping to -7°C.
In addition to the cold and tugging sensations, you may feel slight aching or cramping initially as the applicator begins its work. However, these sensations typically diminish within the first five to ten minutes as the treated area becomes numb.

The FDA initially cleared cryolipolysis in 2010 as a procedure for reducing abdominal fat. Subsequently, the FDA approved its use for treating other body parts a few years later.
The concept of fat freezing was discovered by Harvard scientists observing children eating popsicles. They noticed that large dimples formed on the areas of the children’s cheeks in contact with the cold treats.
Drs. R. Rox Anderson and Dieter Manstein, pioneers of the fat freezing procedure, were fascinated by this process, termed ‘cold-induced fat necrosis.’
Samples taken from pediatric patients indicated fat inflammation in the cheek areas exposed to prolonged contact with the popsicles, while the outer skin remained unaffected.
Their research led them to conclude that controlled cold temperatures could eliminate fat cells without harming the skin or surrounding tissues.
Following this discovery, fat freezing technology was developed to target stubborn fat deposits in patients.
