The winter can be a dangerous time of year in regards to mental health. Lack of sunlight can lead to the development or progression of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), where people experience depressive moods and tiredness. Of course, you do not have to be suffering from SAD to experience low moods. Winter can increase feelings of isolation, loneliness, and depression in a variety of people, in particular, the elderly.

Try and stay active
In winter it is hard to find the motivation to do exercise. We hibernate inside away from the cold, and only go out if we have to. There is no reason why you cannot do exercise in your own home. When you do exercise, your brain releases endorphins that improve your mental health and can help to fight off negative thoughts.
The best thing about home workouts is that you can do them for however long you want, at whatever difficulty level is appropriate. If you don’t want to do proper exercise, then try to ensure that you are always moving around. Sitting down all day may have detrimental effects on your mood. Perhaps try some yoga stretches or pilates, both of which are good for focusing on your breath and forgetting about other things.
Socialise
It is easy to hide away from the world in winter, but try and resist the temptation! Despite what you may think, you will probably feel better if you talk to other people. This doesn’t have to involve meeting people face-to-face – it can be as simple as a phone call. Talking to other people can be a great distraction if you suffer from invasive thoughts, and will remind you that you are not alone.

Creative activity
If you find that winter is keeping you indoors, then take up an activity! Learn how to knit, or draw. Trying something new is one of the best ways to re-channel your energy, and feel good about yourself. A creative activity could be the perfect way for you to express yourself and work through your feelings. Mindfulness is another activity that is commonly suggested for those suffering from depressive moods. This involves looking at the world and specific moments to understand thoughts and emotions. Furthermore, simple tasks such as colouring can also help to take your mind off things. There are plenty of mindfulness colouring books available – even Harry Potter ones!
Eat well
Eating badly often makes us feel bad about ourselves. Winter probably enhances this, because we are lazier and the darkness makes us lose motivation and increases tiredness. This makes it all the more essential that we eat well during winter. Warm soups are ideal for the cold weather and are also a much healthier option.
However, it is also good to treat yourself every once in a while. Sit back and relax, and take the time to destress and give your mind some love.

Self-care is one of the most crucial parts of life. You must always put yourself first if you feel that your mental health is suffering. Don’t sit in silence – take steps to try and improve your mood, or seek further help.
