How effective is the Novavax Vaccine?
The Novavax vaccine, a new COVID-19 vaccine being trialled and tested in the UK, has shown to be 95.6% effective against the original Covid-19 strain during phase three trials. Furthermore, the Novavax vaccine has shown an 86% effective protection against the new UK variant. More than 15,000 people between the ages of 18 and 84 (27% of these people being over 65) enrolled for trialling during phase three. The vaccination requires you to have two jabs three weeks apart for full effectiveness. Chief executive of Novavax, Stan Erck, said that the trials were “as good as we could have hoped” and “spectacular” during the testing phases.
How does the vaccine work?
The Novavax vaccine differs from the other COVID-19 vaccines (Oxford University/AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, and the Moderna vaccine) that are already in circulation. Novavax has used an engineered protein taken from the original virus and combined it with a plant-based ingredient to generate a stronger immune system to fight off or prevent the COVID-19 virus. The vaccine itself only needs to be stored at fridge temperature, like the AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines, which means the supply chain management and distribution of the vaccine would be easier than the Pfizer vaccine which is being distributed. More information can be found on the BBC website.
Does the vaccine work against the South Africa Variant?
During the South African trials for the Novavax, around 4,400 people (including some volunteers with HIV) were tested. Results showed the vaccine was effective amongst those without HIV by 60% and 49% overall protection when immune-compromised volunteers are included.
When will the vaccine be released?
The UK has secured 60 million doses of the Novavax vaccine. Production of the vaccine at the Fujifilm Plant, (Stockton-on-Tees) will hopefully start by March or April this year, which is around the same time that the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is likely to approve the vaccine. However, Minister Lucy Frazer has said that the regulation process for the vaccine to be approved, with no set date for the decision as it is “out of our control.”
UK Government are reportedly paying £11.66 per vaccination which is less than Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, but more expensive than the AstraZeneca vaccine, which are being supplied at cost.
