About Sir Tom Moore.
At the age of 100, 30th April 1920 – 2nd February 2021, Sir Tom Moore has unfortunately died from Covid-19. He leaves behind two daughters from two marriages and is described as a national inspiration. Sir Tom Moore did so much for the nation and will go down in UK history as a Legend. During hard times in a Global pandemic, he put a smile on people’s faces and made such a difference to the NHS with his charity work.
His family celebrated his life with his daughter Lucy Teixeira. She said he had a long life and peaceful death, adding: “I’m really grateful – he had a good innings. He leaves us with a really strong, powerful message – tomorrow is a good day. Those words represent his whole life to me. He has shown resilience, courage, and I have seen him do that all his life.”
Early life and war record.
Captain Sir Tom Moore was born in Keighley (West Riding of Yorkshire) in 1920. Upon leaving school when he was 15, Sir Tom did a three-year apprenticeship with a water engineer, followed by a civil engineering course at Bradford Technical College. In 1940, he signed up for war service with the 8th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, and the following year he was commissioned as a second lieutenant. At the beginning of World War Two, he was sent to India and Myanmar to train his comrades in tank warfare and motorcycling. After the war, he was awarded four medals, the 1939-1945 Star, the Burma Star, the Defence Medal, and the War Medal 1939-1945.
Helping the nation.
Besides being a war hero, Sir Tom was popularly known for the money he raised for NHS charities during the Covid-19 pandemic. Aiming to raise £1000 for charities by walking laps around his garden, he managed to raise a magnificent amount of £32,794,701 from more than 1.5 million supporters. Ellie Orton, chief executive of the NHS, said the funds raised by Captain Sir Tom had “reached the length and breadth of the UK through every one of our 241 member charities”. She also said that he was “a one-off, and he leaves the world a better place.”
Message from the Queen.
Sir Tom had no shortage of people paying respects and complimenting his life. The BBC Website reported to the Nation that He had a private message of condolence by the Queen, and a spokesperson added, “Her Majesty very much enjoyed meeting Captain Sir Tom and his family at Windsor last year. Her thoughts, and those of the royal family, are with them, recognising the inspiration he provided for the whole nation and others across the world.” For all that Sir Tom has done, he will never be forgotten, and his memory will live on for years to come. Thank you for shining a ray of light on us when dark clouds surrounded us.
