Vaccine passports: Everything you need to know

September 2021 | Reading time: 5 minutes

Starting from the end of September, vaccine passports will become a requirement in England when attending nightclubs and other indoor venues.

Fully vaccinated adults in the UK no longer must enter quarantine when returning from amber list countries. Furthermore, they can be exempted from being required to self-isolate when they come in close contact with people with COVID-19, given that they do not exhibit symptoms.

In the UK, the NHS COVID Pass is used to demonstrate a person’s current COVID-19 status. Thus, it also acts as a vaccination passport to prove whether a person has been fully vaccinated.

Vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi stated that the vaccine passport scheme could be put into motion by the end of this month as all over-18s will have been inoculated by then.

Despite criticisms from businesses as well as some MPs, the vaccine minister believes it is the best approach for the economy to remain while ensuring safety.

He said: ‘The best way we can keep those industries open in my view, in our view, is to work with the industry.’

Mr Zahawi further added, ‘One thing that we have learned is that the virus tends to spike and spread in large gatherings of people, especially indoors.’

He indicated that stadiums around the country could reopen last month due to the Premier League football clubs asking attendees for vaccination proof.

According to the vaccine minister: ‘When the evidence that you are presented is so clear cut and that we want to make sure the industry doesn’t have to go through [an]open-shut, open-shut sort of strategy, then the right thing to do is to introduce that by the end of September when all over 18 year-olds have had their two jabs.’

The NHS COVID Pass and foreign travel

Although restrictions in the UK have been eased, the pandemic that started it all still prevails. As such, foreign travel largely involves numerous preventive measures comprising PCR tests, vaccination certificates and passenger locator forms.

New laws that came into effect from 19 July allow fully vaccinated individuals and under 18s to travel to amber list countries without needing to quarantine on return to the UK.

According to the government, more than 30 countries, including Spain and Greece, accept the NHS COVID Pass. Most other countries offer less strict entry requirements for UK travellers, provided they have been fully inoculated at least 14 days before travelling.
