What is the COVID-19 IgG Antibody Home Test?
The IgG Home Antibody Test Kit is a pathology-based test that uses a blood sample to confirm if an individual has previously been infected with the coronavirus. Medical professionals from a UKAS accredited laboratory will analyse your blood sample to establish if Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies that are linked to COVID-19 are present. IgG antibodies are created by the body in response to the coronavirus. This type of COVID-19 antibody is linked to longer-term immunity in contrast to Immunoglobulin M antibodies, which are formed to fight the initial infection.
This COVID-19 Antibody Test should be taken at least 14 to 21 days after you first experience symptoms. This is because it takes time for the body to produce enough antibodies to be detected, and if the home testing kit is used too early, it may lead to a false negative result. It is important to note that if you receive a positive result from this type of COVID-19 test, this does not mean you are completely immune to the coronavirus.
The finger-prick testing kit comes with all the necessary components you will need to collect a sample at home.
What components are included in the IgG Antibody Home Testing Kit?
When you receive your IgG finger-prick antibody test, you will find all the components that you need for sample collection. This includes:
- Lancets
- Sealable tube
- Plastic container
- Alcohol pad
- Cotton pad
- Pathology form
How do I collect a blood sample?
The IgG Antibody Test Kit provided by VIVO Clinic makes sample collection simple. All the components needed are found within the kit, as listed above. Initially, an individual should use the alcohol pad to disinfect the tip of the finger. Next, the lancets are used to pierce the skin, and the first drop of blood should be wiped away with a cotton pad. Following this, the blood is transferred to the test tube provided. There is a notch in the plastic container which enables you to secure the tube in an upright position.
Gently massaging the finger may help with blood sample collection. Furthermore, if you stand up with your hands pointing downwards, this will help the blood flow.
Once the blood sample meets the relevant line on the tube, the test tube should be sealed. Fill in the relevant information on the outside of the tube, and place the sample collection tube inside the plastic container.
Before you send your blood sample to the laboratory, you must ensure that you fill in the pathology form and place this in the postage envelope provided.
What results can I receive?
You will receive either a positive or negative result. A positive result will certify that IgG antibodies have been found in your blood sample, therefore confirming that you have previously been infected with COVID-19. This does not mean that you are completely immune to COVID-19.
A negative result from the COVID-19 antibody test implies that you have not been infected by the coronavirus. It is important to note that you may receive a negative result if you take the finger-prick test before your body has been able to build up enough coronavirus IgG antibodies.
When will I receive results?
Once your blood sample has been received by the UKAS accredited laboratory that we have partnered with, you will be sent your results within 24 hours. The whole process should take around 48 hours, provided that you send your blood sample to the laboratory on the same day that you collect the sample.
Is the IgG Antibody Test CE certified?
Yes. The pathology-based antibody home test also complies with ISO 13485 regulations.
Should I take the test when I first experience symptoms?
No, you should wait at least 14 to 21 days after you first experience COVID-19 symptoms before you take the pathology-based antibody test. This is because IgG antibodies will not be detectable when you are first infected with COVID-19, as it takes time for the body to build up an immune response.
If you take the pathology-based test when you first experience symptoms, you may receive a false negative result.
Are antibodies still present within the body weeks after infection?
Generally, once the body has created antibodies and fought an infection, these antibodies will remain within the body for weeks, or even years in cases of illnesses such as chickenpox. Unfortunately, medical researchers do not know enough about COVID-19 to be able to confirm the length of time antibodies remain within the body. Furthermore, there is currently no evidence that people cannot be infected with the coronavirus more than once.
