Although the perils of the pandemic have not passed completely, much progress has been made in the right track with the vaccination programmes all over the world. Nonetheless, a lot remains to be accomplished before we can claim a final triumph in the battle against COVID-19.
To quell further spread as well as to defend the headway made by the numerous vaccination programmes around the world, governments have assembled a checklist of some very basic precautionary measures. The most widespread of these is the PCR test for travel.
It is near-impossible to visit a foreign country nowadays without being screened for the virus via a pre-travel PCR test. And as for returning to the UK, there are strict safety regulations based on the traffic light status of the country one had visited.
What is the PCR test, and why is it so popular for screening travellers?
PCR tests are a method of detecting current COVID-19 detection in a person. The test uses a laboratory technique where the possible presence of the virus RNA in a subject’s samples is established through sequencing.
Although there are no tests that produce results that are 100% accurate, the PCR test comes quite close, according to experts. Thus, it is the most popular choice for screening foreign visitors at the borders of every country.
When must one take a PCR test before travelling?
The exact timing of when a PCR test must be taken varies with each country. Every government has their own rules regarding how long before travel a test can be taken for it to be considered valid.
Many countries have established that a test cannot be taken any longer than 72 hours before departure, and many others only accept results from a test taken within 48 hours of arrival.
Thus, it is best to be thoroughly familiarised with the destination country’s entry requirements before taking a PCR test in order to visit it.
The UK government’s website has the entry requirements of all the countries in the world.
